November 15th, 2008 News

Instead of waiting any longer for professional photos, I decided to update with some I took myself.  The 5K Run/Walk on November 2nd was magical.  The weather was perfect.  The sky was art.

We saw the sun rise.  The turnout was huge, (we still don't have official numbers, but at least a couple of hundred people.)  The race was really exciting.  For many of us, it was the first we've ever seen live.

We are so in awe of the runners.  What amazing athletes!  We made a poster to thank Patron, the Roadrunners and all of those who participated in the event.  Please click here to see it : Poster

Nothing would make us happier than to do it all again...maybe next year? Same time?  Same place?  Maybe?  :)

September 1, 2008 News

Our biggest news is that we have a HUGE fundraising event coming up. It is a 5K Run/Walk on Sunday, November 2nd at Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek. It kicks off at 7:00 AM. I know that's early, but it's a running thing, and it's for a great cause...Our kitties! It will be attended by the mayors of Coconut Creek, Coral Springs and Parkland as well as the folks from Life Publications. There will be a post run party with food and drinks. We will bring a donation bin to the event to collect food and other supplies for the kitties. If the cute flyer below doesn't inspire you to come out and spend your morning with us, nothing will.

For those of you waiting for news on the criminal investigation regarding the theft of our bank account almost a year ago, we don't have any details, but that's only because it is an "active investigation". It is being treated seriously, and we will pass information about the outcome on to you as soon as we receive word.

Four kitties in love with each other got a home together after nine months of careful planning and anticipation! In August, Sara became a new cat mom. She adopted Chelsea, (the kitty with the fused vertebrae), her two boyfriends, Zoomer and Saffron, and Saffron's sister Cilantro. Talk about Big Love! We are so excited for them and are looking forward to many, many updates!

Chokolate's reign of terror ends as she is snatched up and spirited away to safety! In other words, we now have an office kitty.

Nature can be cruel, and things aren't always fair. For unknown reasons, Chokolate became our "Pariah Cat". The other kitties at our shelter, acting on instinct, decided that she couldn't partake of their world. They wouldn't let her come out to eat, drink, or use the litter box. We had to provide her with "room service" in whatever condo she was cowering in. She has literally lived through hell. Last year, we acquired an office. We promised ourselves that it would be a "cat free" zone. We have now come to the conclusion that we can no longer witness or be accomplices to her torture. Today we set her free. She has a huge window, approximately 500 sq. ft of space where she can relax and be safe, and a new start on life. As of her first day, she's excited and scared. She's been making muffins in her new bed and rubbing against our legs. She's more than paid her dues and deserves nothing more than to get her own pet free family. Please come and spend some time with her and take her home. She's been waiting forever!

May 31, 2008 Sad Update

May 31, 2008
ENTIRE BANK ACCOUNT STOLEN FROM FELINE FRIENDS
This is the update that has been so long overdue.  It seems like when you are in the middle of the news happening, it’s almost impossible to write about.  That’s where our friends have come in.  Friends both old and new have watched us go through the last few months almost in a state of shock.  They watched things go from the normal daily struggle to not fine at all.  They watched while our director took money out of her own retirement account to pay the rent and buy food for the cats.  These friends did put pen to paper, and boy did they get the word out!  Their letters went to their friends, to the media, and got cross-posted to just about every animal forum out there.

The response has been overwhelming.  We have been receiving cards and donations from Texas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Illinois, and all over Florida.  Another volunteer donated Quicken to our shelter and taught me how to use it which should make the banking and budget areas of grant applications more within our reach. You guys are our heroes!  We are finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel.  We have tried to personally thank all of you who donated.  I sent Sloppy Kiss cards to everyone who donated to us online.  (I know that a few of you deleted them probably because you weren’t sure what they were, but if they’re still in your deleted folder, they’re very cute and they’re from Feline Friends.)  All of you who sent us checks through the mail should be receiving hand written thank you notes.

The criminal case we began on January 5th of 2008 has just now reached it’s way to the top of the cases and as of this week, the last week of May, it is now considered an “active” case.  Please click HERE if you would like more information about the theft. Please continue your support by visiting our Donations page.

May 28th, 2008 - Theft

As 2007 came to an end, we realized that we were in pretty dire straights financially.  The recession, the housing market crisis and the job situation were all affecting our donations and adoptions.  For the first time we were going to have to dip into our “emergency funds” to ensure the continuing operation of our shelter.  On December 31st, we discovered those funds were gone.
In May of 2001, Joan Cookfair, who was at the time dying of bone cancer, left Feline Friends her animal welfare group, Helping Hands to Animals.  In the presence of attorneys and board members of both Helping Hands to Animals and Feline Friends, legal papers were signed stating, “Helping Hands will turn over their assets to Feline Friends.  Helping Hands will continue to help generate money for Feline Friends thus they will continue to serve their mission.”
Part of the assets was a bank account containing $11,290.69.  We tried to never tap into that money.  That was our money set aside for a rainy day.  It was our safety net and it was gone.  Here’s what we have since learned, (without any names being named, because this is now as of Wednesday, May 28th 2008, an active investigation.)
  1. We had a volunteer for a couple of years. He and his wife cleaned one or two days a week. He became the treasurer for Feline Friends.  He also wrote some grants for us.  On November 21st of 2004, however, he sent me his letter of resignation.
  2. On March 17th of 2005, almost five months after his resignation, our veterinarian and new grant writer, Dr. Don Meredith, had to write to this former volunteer requesting that he please stop accessing our bank account information which we could see had happened as recently as the week prior.
  3. On September 17 of 2006 we decided to let Helping Hands to Animals as a group become inactive since our legal documents stated that it was only to continue to exist as a means to help raise funds for Feline Friends or not at all.  We were not using it to solicit funds in any way so we let it dissolve.
  4. It appears that former volunteer must have been stalking the Sunbiz website and keeping as close an eye on it as he was on our bank accounts.  On September 17th of 2007, exactly one year later, he reactivated our former group with a new set of board members, while still using OUR tax ID number.
  5. Then, on October 24th of 2007, with those new documents from Sunbiz, he went to our bank and met with his friend and neighbor, a Suntrust employee.  They simply dismissed the two signature cards that had existed for the account since the account was created. The two signers were our director, Cindy Weber, and the former co-director who retired in January of 2006.  Neither one was contacted by the bank to see if this third party had some sort of right or permission to, for lack of a better word, “hijack” our account.  Even though by law, all business accounts are required to have two signers as a protection, he listed his whole new board of directors as “not a signer” for the account followed by their actual signatures.  We now know that at least one of those signatures was forged. He, himself, was the only one listed as a “signer.”  At the same time, he and the employee changed the address on the account ensuring that we not receive any information on the changes.
  6. Two days later, on October 26th of 2007, he withdrew all of the $11,290.69 in the form of a check.
That brings us back to the beginning when Cindy discovered the theft on December 31st.  She filed a police report on January 5th of 2008. Once we were issued a case number, Suntrust Bank began an Internal Fraud Investigation, which they then almost immediately kicked back out, because what we call a theft, they call an error and say that since it took us sixty four days to notice the “error”, it falls outside of their time frame for culpability.
We also learned that the justice system is very slow.  Almost five months after filing our police report, the case has just now made it to the top of the cases in the Economic Crimes Division.  We are trying to not be too hopeful, but we are excited that justice might be served.  If you are a praying person, the shelter and it’s kitties could use any good energies you could send our way.  We will keep you updated.
